Project Overview
I took Photography I class for a few reasons: to learn how to make awesome pictures personally, business-wise, and for art, to learn how to master using my new Olympus E-M10 Mark III camera, and to learn how to analyze pictures and others’ work better. My final project was to compose a booklet displaying my skills and what I learned from the class. I took 152 pictures of one same moment on the same day with many different shots. Choosing which pictures to use was hard but I managed to narrow it down to 10 pictures. Using LightRoom and Photoshop, I edited each image to perfection fitting my vision. After the images were edited, I placed them in InDesign making layouts of the booklet. The few pages that have 2 images on a page are intentional; I used white space to communicate the message in hope of creating an emotional impact on the viewer. I printed them on high quality luster photo paper. For the final critique, I placed the images in one line across the board. I allowed other classmates and the teacher to view them and read my voice. It was powerful and emotional, especially for me.
Introduction
In my work I emulated and combined the style of two different photographers, Barbara Probst and Duane Michals. I used Michals’ style of telling a story through photo sequences and incorporating handwritten text sharing a personal voice. I also incorporated Probst’s style of making various angle shots of a single moment and using a combination of color and black & white photos. In some pictures, to symbolize internal struggle, I added a feature, a fading effect. The colors used in each image reveal different perspectives and emotions.
My work is based on my personal experience as the only deaf child in my family. This story is just a tiny part of numerous events in my life that impacted me. It is still happening to me today and it will never end. I hope my creation will help you see my perspective. I cannot speak on behalf of other deaf people but I can safely say there are many others who were in my shoes and they felt the same way I did. I hope my work will encourage you to become more mindful and inclusive.
